Vixen Thor is named after the legend of a witch Vixana. She would prey on weary travelers who wipped up fog, causing them to drown below in a bog.

The tor was also advantage point for MG Charles Gehrhardt of the 29th ID, to watch manuevers for training or have a Soldier secure their chin strap.

60 years ago tactical headquarters were set up in the area to train World War II 29ers.

Climbing to the top of the Tor leaves an impressive view of where divisions of American Soldiers moved across the Moors of West Dartmoor.
