Command Sgt. Maj. Robert W. Huffman was born in Clifton Forge, Va, April 24, 1947. He enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard on Jan. 15, 1970. After graduation from basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., and completion of AIT, he was awarded the expert mortar badge and assigned to Co. C, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry, Covington, Va. He served as assistant gunner, gunner and infantry squad leader before transferring to the 80th Division (Army Reserve) on Jan, 16, 1976, as a basic marksmanship instructor. In 1983, his civilian job took him to Asheville, N. C., where he became an NCOES instructor with the 3288th USAR School, Greenville, S. C. In November 1986, he performed a short tour with 2nd Army at Fort Bragg, N. C., serving as Assistant Commandant of their Regional PLDC Academy. Huffman returned to the VARNG in 1986, accepting an AGR position with the Infantry Training Detachment at Fort A. P. Hill. In 1987, he transferred to HHC, 29th Infantry Division. He served as the HHC Training NCO, G-3 Assistant Operations Sergeant and the Division Operations Sergeant until September 1995. He transferred to the 1st Brigade as the Brigade Operations Sergeant and acting Brigade Command Sergeant Major for six months before being selected as the Division CSM, May 1, 2000. Civilian Education: Covington H. S., Greenbrier Military Prep School, Memphis State University, Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, Mars Hill College School of Social Work and the University of North Carolina School of Social Work. Military Education: Methods of Learning Course, Senior NCO Course, Combat Leaders Course, Light Leaders Course, Rights of Passage Course, PLDC-RC Instructors Course, Advanced NCO-AC, Battle Staff NCO-AC, USA Sergeants Major Academy and USA CSM-D Course. Awards and Decorations: Maryland Meritorious Service Ribbon, Virginia National Guard Perfect Attendance Ribbon, Virginia National Guard Service Ribbon (5th Award), Virginia Emergency Service Ribbon (6th Award), Virginia Bronze Star, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4th Device), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with HD), National Defense Service Medal with Star, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award) and Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award).
